Material Degradation Course for Utility Engineers

This short course focuses on materials degradation and related issues, designed for utility engineers. The course, in English, will be held at the MAI (EDF R&D site "Les Renardières") from May 4 to 7.

About the course

Degradation of reactor components is a significant threat to the long-term economic viability of the existing fleet of light water reactors (LWR). The objective of this course is to start from the fundamentals and provide an integrated, up-to-date picture of materials reliability in the existing fleet of LWRs.  Particular emphasis will be placed on corrosion-related degradation of components. Field experience and degradation management approaches will be described and linked to our current understanding of the degradation mechanisms of carbon and low-alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel-base alloys and zirconium alloys under LWR service conditions. New: the final Course Program is now available.

Selected Topics to Be Covered By a Large Group of Industry Experts:

  • Stress corrosion cracking of stainless steel and Alloy 600
  • Flow assisted corrosion, prediction of susceptible areas, inspection
  • Steam generator inspection requirements and implementation
  • Secondary side chemistry for reliable operation of steam generators
  • Inspection of dissimilar metal welds in PWRs and BWRs
  • Inspection requirements of PWR and BWR internals LWR fuel performance, challenge to achieve zero defects
  • Primary system dose reduction through chemistry
  • Pressure vessel integrity issues, PTS rule, bottom mounted nozzles
  • Steam generator integrity assessment requirements
  • BWR degradation mitigation strategies
